2020 Curse at the Crab

The Curse at the Crab is one of our favorite endurance races and this year we hope to offer up a 3 hour option along with the 6 hour option.  Do as many laps as you can in 3 hours or 6 hours and see who gets the most laps in the shortest time!

We have asked for a new date for the Curse at the Crab from the park and it is pending Wake County status on large events. We have asked for a date in June and a date in December. Once we know, we will update this page will all the info, so stay tuned.

2020(?) Beaverdam New Light Challenge

The Beaverdam New Light Challenge connects the great trails of Beaverdam and New Light to create one of the most unique mountain bike endurance races held in the Triangle.

Race Date Pending

The 2020 Race has been postponed. Hopefully, we can make this happen at the end of the year or early 2021.

The race is staged from the parking lot in Beaverdam nearest to the trail head.  Racers ride Beaverdam's Outer Loop and West Loop in a counterclockwise directions, then exit the park and ride over to New Light for a lap in a counterclockwise direction. Racers then return to Beaverdam to ride the South Loop.

Total distance is roughly 33 miles of which a mere 12 is road.

Location

The race will start at Beaverdam at the Mountain biking parking lot.

36°03'07.1"N 78°41'40.7"W
14916 Creedmoor Rd, Wake Forest, NC 27587

Take the first left after the gate entrance, then take another left and the parking lot is to the right.  There are restrooms adjacent to the parking lot.  Gates open at 8 AM, there is $7 entry fee this time of year- please carpool!

Typical Check-in and Start Time:

Check-in is from 8:30-9:20 AM.  Race will start at 9:30 AM for Ages 18-up (wave starts), 10 AM for Juniors and 11 AM for Kids.

Race Route:

This may change but the usual start/finish line and staging of the BD & NL Challenge will be in the parking lot near the lower trailhead at Beaverdam. Racers will ride the Outer and West loops. Then they ride from the lower trail head to the exit of Beaverdam and make a right hand turn (North) on Highway 50.  Next up: New Light via Creedmor Rd then Old Weaver Trail.

Racers will enter the New Light trails and make a complete lap in a counterclockwise direction. Then exit New Light and proceed back to Beaverdam. They will make a left hand turn from Highway 50 into Beaverdam. Then it's a right hand turn into the South Loop at the upper trailhead near the entrance to the park.  Racers will complete a full loop of the trail, exiting at the same place they entered. Racers will then proceed to the start/finish line.  For further details, check out these map links:

Safety and Environmental Considerations:

  • Helmets are required during the entire race and use a working red tail light on the road portion of the race.
  • All racers must demonstrate they have a working red tail light at check-in.
  • All racers must pack in and pack out their own food/drink.  Do not litter the trails!
  • No alcohol is allowed in the park.

Support/Food/Water:

The BD&NL Challenge is meant to be self-supported; there will be no aid stations along the route. There will, however, be a food/water drop off zone at the entrance/exit of Beaverdam’s South Loop. Racers are invited to put water and food at this location prior to the beginning of the race. Please remember to pack out all waste and empty containers.

There is no traffic control on the road, please follow road rules and take care when passing or making a left turn back into the Beaverdam park.

2020 6BC Endurance Race

Come out for 6 hours of as many laps at Briar Chapel as you can muster or go out for the 3 hour option. All the net money raised from this race will go to improve and expand the trail system at Briar Chapel!  A big thanks to Newland Communities for supporting mountain bike trails as part of their community development.

When is this going to happen?

Good question. We don't have a date yet for the 2020 race but we can say that it won't be the November 1st date we were hoping for. We will notify TORC members as soon as we know the plan. And we'll post it as an event in the TORC meetup group too.

We reserve the right to combine categories if there are less than five participants in a category.  We also reserve the right to create more categories if there are enough participants (so there will be Open Women age groups if the ladies out there encourage each other to sign up and race!).

Race Route:
This year we are going to encompass some of the new trail built late last year so expect a route that is somewhere between 8-9 miles long. Click here for the Race route.  Novice will not go up & down Bennett & ETD so if you are not a Novice- expect to ride ~8.5 miles per lap while Novice racers will do ~ 6 miles per lap.  We have Meetup rides at Briar Chapel on a fairly regular basis so come out when you can beforehand with us and see what kind of trails are here. Expect some rocks, expect some climbing, and a lot of fun.

Awards:
Awards will be given 3-deep to both 3-hr and 6-hr categories. The awards will be based on how many racers compete in a category.

  • A minimum of 5 racers/teams per category is required to issue the 1st Place prize.
  • A minimum of 10 racers/teams per category to issue the 2nd Place prize.
  • A minimum of 15 racers/teams per category to issue the 3rd Place prize.

So if there are at least 10 racers in a category, 1st place and 2nd place will receive the prizes listed. If there are 15 racers, then 3rd place will also receive a prize.

If a category has only 4 racers, the 2nd place prize listed will be issued to the 1st place winner. For example, if only 4 experts race, 1st place will receive $50 Performance card or $50 cash plus TORC socks (or a TORC cup if you prefer).

If a category has only 3 racers, the 3rd place prize listed will be issued to the 1st place winner. For example, if only 3 experts race, 1st place will receive a much coveted TORC stainless steel cup.

If there are only 2 racers/teams competing, no prize will be issued but you get podium time and recognition.

The sponsors are Performance Bike, Bicycle Chain, Back Alley Bikes (BAB) and Bullseye Bicycle. The All Star Bike shop gift card is a donation from a generous TORC member.
